Over the summer, UC Irvine's Program in Public Health was elevated to the Joe C. Wen School of Population & Public Health, making it the first public health school in Orange County and the fourth in the UC system.

Additionally, a $42.5 million gift from Joe C. Wen and family named the school and will support its highest priorities: Lead in innovative research and training, address diverse public health challenges, and advance health equity and public health education. Read more.

Suellen Hopfer published a study in Environmental Research Health examining the compounded effects of frequent wildfires on the physical and mental health of Southern California communities, particularly in the eastern Coachella Valley.

Resulting health challenges are respiratory issues and psychological stress, and underscores the urgent need for better emergency preparedness, communication, and tailored support for vulnerable populations. Read more.

HEALTH EQUITY

Research, led by Alana LeBrón, delved into the impact of restrictive immigration policies on Mexican-born women living in Detroit, highlighting significant mental health challenges and socio-economic hardships. Published in BMC Public Health.

Findings underscore how certain policies disproportionately affect Mexican-born women, exacerbating issues such as family separation and access to healthcare. This study is a crucial contribution to understanding the broader implications of immigration legislation on vulnerable populations. Read more.

Nichole Quick joins Wen Public Health as the new Director of Master of Public Helath Program & Practice and a health sciences associate clinical professor. Her experience in occupational health also benefits the larger UC Irvine campus.
