Our very own Kylie Jones (pictured at left), a public health policy undergraduate student and external vice president of the Associated Students of UC Irvine, along with two other students, were featured on a UCI Podcast. Jones and her student colleagues made it their mission to increase voter turnout on campus.

Ms. Jones has set her sights on pursuing a Master of Public Health with a concentration in epidemiology, followed by a career ensuring that communities are prepared for disasters.

Three of our Wen Public Health students showcased their research under the theme "Modern Perspectives in Toxicology” at the 36th Annual Fall Symposium of the Southern California Society of Toxicology, held on October 3, 2024, at Edwards LifeSciences Corp in Irvine, CA.

Jayveeritz Bautista, an EHS toxicology track PhD student, presented an oral and poster presentation on the "Pulmonary Effects of Inhaled Metals from Secondhand E-Cigarette Aerosol Exposure," guided by advisors Andrea De Vizcaya Ruiz and Michael Kleinman.

Madeline K.M. Vera-Colón, EHS toxicology track PhD student, discussed her research, "Broken Bones: The Developmental Toxicity of Air Pollution," with mentorship from Nicole Sparks.

Alejandro Martinez Santos, a public health sciences undergraduate student, delivered an oral presentation and poster on "E-Cigarette Exposure Induces Lung Collagen Accumulation in a Sex and Region Specific Manner." His presentation earned 2nd place in the poster competition. His advisor is Andrea De Vizcaya Ruiz.

Hemangi Mavadiya, MPH, RD, PhD in Public Health candidate (disease prevention concentration), has been awarded the 2024 Commission on Dietetic Registration Doctoral Scholarship from the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND) Foundation. This prestigious scholarship will provide support for Mavadiya as she continues to pursue her doctoral degree in public health as a registered dietitian.

Kalani Kieu-Diem Phillips, MPH, a PhD in Public Health student (disease prevention concentration), played a significant role in the development of the report "From Surviving to Healing: Results and Demands from a Study with Survivors of Sexual Violence on University of California Campuses."
|
|
|
This impactful report was cited in and contributed key recommendations to Senate Bill (SB 1491: Postsecondary education: Equity in Higher Education Act), which was signed into law by Governor Newsom in September 2024.

Tessa Pulido, MPH, CPH, a PhD in Public Health student (disease prevention concentration), has been awarded the Graduate Student Fellowship from the Center for Liberation, Anti-Racism, & Belonging (C-Lab). With this fellowship, she received funding to conduct her community-based participatory research project titled "Mapping the City: Gentrification and Racial Disparities in Food Access and the Built Environment for Lower-Income Latiné in Costa Mesa, CA."

The fellowship recognizes projects that demonstrate exceptional potential to advance social justice through innovative research and diverse dissemination methods. Pulido will also attend seminars to collaborate with fellow researchers.

We’re proud to announce that three of our students—Christian Black, Chris Weir, and Karen Valladares—have been selected as 2024-2025 Rose Hills Science and Engineering Scholarship recipients. This prestigious fellowship recognizes outstanding graduate students in life sciences, natural sciences, and engineering.
This honor is awarded to underrepresented STEM students who demonstrate academic excellence, financial need, and leadership qualities that align with the Rose Hills Foundation's mission to support and develop future leaders.
